Shhhh! California bans noisy TV commercials

Noisy television commercials have been banned in California following a new law signed on Monday that requires advertisers to lower their volume.

For years, viewers across the United States have complained that ads blast louder than the shows they interrupt, often forcing them to reach for the remote in frustration.

Under the new law, commercials can no longer exceed the volume level of the programs they accompany.

“We heard Californians loud and clear, and what’s clear is that they don’t want commercials louder than their favorite shows,” Governor Gavin Newsom said after signing the bill.

The updated legislation expands existing broadcast and cable sound regulations to include streaming platforms, ensuring a quieter and more consistent viewing experience statewide.
