FG: Nnamdi Kanu Can Be Treated at DSS Medical Facility

Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government on Friday explained why it opposed the request to move detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to the National Hospital in Abuja for medical treatment.

Government lawyers, led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, told the Federal High Court that a medical report prepared by Kanu’s private physicians, led by Prof. Martin Aghaji, was exaggerated and suspicious. The report had recommended urgent transfer to either the National Hospital or a foreign facility due to Kanu’s deteriorating health.

Awomolo argued that doctors at the Department of State Services (DSS), headed by Dr. Mohammed Nasir, had examined Kanu and confirmed he could be adequately treated at the DSS medical facility. He also disclosed that the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has set up a seven-man panel to review the conflicting medical reports.

The government further contended that Prof. Aghaji changed Kanu’s medication without involving DSS medical officers who had managed his health for four years, thereby undermining the credibility of the report. It warned that moving Kanu to the National Hospital could disrupt services and endanger security.

On the other hand, Kanu’s lawyer, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, urged the court to grant the transfer, stressing that his client required urgent medical care beyond the DSS facility. He assured the court that Kanu would not abscond and that the National Hospital, being a government-owned facility, posed no security risk.

After hearing both sides, Justice James Omotosho adjourned ruling on the motion marked FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2025 to today.
