FG Cancels Independence Day Parade, Marks 65th Anniversary with Low-Key Events

Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has cancelled the parade earlier scheduled to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary on Wednesday, October 1.

The announcement was made in a statement issued Monday by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen.

“The Federal Government wishes to announce the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade… The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary,” the statement read.

Government, however, confirmed that other lined-up activities will hold as planned, including President Bola Tinubu’s nationwide broadcast, cultural programmes, and the grand finale of the National Campus Debate. It expressed regret over any inconvenience while appreciating the understanding of Nigerians and international guests.

At a world press conference in Abuja, SGF Senator George Akume said Independence Day is a time for sober reflection and renewed patriotism, stressing this year’s theme, “Nigeria at 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation.”

Akume praised President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that ongoing reforms, though tough, are aimed at stabilising the economy, restoring investor confidence, and creating jobs. He urged citizens to rise above political, ethnic, and religious divides, affirming that Nigeria’s best days lie ahead.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the 65th anniversary as monumental, likening the number 65 to sapphire, which symbolizes loyalty, truth, and wisdom. He lauded Tinubu’s leadership in reforms across taxation, education, energy, agriculture, and healthcare, adding that Nigeria continues to play a leading role in Africa and global affairs.

Nigeria, which gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, has traditionally marked the occasion with parades, religious services, and official addresses.
