NBA Anambra Condemns Brutal Murder of Lawyer, Declares Court Boycott

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Anambra Chapter, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of one of its members, Mr. Ifeanyi-Rolex Iloakasia.

Iloakasia, a member of the Otuocha Bar, was murdered alongside his client in Nanka, Orumba North Local Government Area, while returning from a court sitting at Ekwulobia High Court on May 15.

In a statement signed by K.G. Abonyi, Chairman of the Committee of Chairmen and Secretaries of NBA Anambra, the association described the incident as a “blatant assault” on the legal profession and the rule of law. The NBA expressed deep grief and outrage over what it termed a “senseless” killing, especially coming while the memory of the loss of Awa P. Awa, former Vice Chairman of the Ihiala Branch, is still fresh.

In protest, the Committee of Chairmen and Secretaries has directed lawyers across the state to boycott court sittings from May 20 to May 21.

“Justice must be served,” the statement read. “We demand that relevant authorities leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth and ensuring accountability.”

The NBA appreciated the swift response of the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, who visited the crime scene for an on-the-spot assessment and ordered preliminary investigations. However, they urged the police, DSS, and other security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the killers.

“Speed is essential in bringing the perpetrators to justice. Too many lawyers have fallen victim to insecurity in Anambra, and the legal profession cannot survive under fear,” the association said.

The NBA also called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to overhaul and strengthen security operations across the state to prevent further tragic incidents.
