Aisha Achimugu Declares Hunger Strike in EFCC Custody

Prominent business executive and socialite, Aisha Achimugu, has declared a hunger strike while in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following her arrest by operatives of the agency.

Her legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Chikaosolu Ojukwu, disclosed on Tuesday in Abuja that Achimugu was arrested around 5 a.m. at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport upon her return from London.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the EFCC had, in March, declared Achimugu wanted over allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering. A Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice I.E. Ekwo, had on Monday ordered her to report at the EFCC office on Tuesday and to appear before the court on Wednesday.

According to Ojukwu, Achimugu had returned voluntarily to honour the EFCC’s invitation and had formally informed the court of her intention to visit the commission.

“In line with the court’s directive, our client came back to Nigeria and was on her way to honour the EFCC invitation when she was arrested at the airport,” he said.

He added that Achimugu immediately began a hunger strike after her arrest, describing her as “a prisoner of conscience” and insisting that the arrest violated the rule of law.

Efforts by NAN to reach EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale were unsuccessful, as calls to his phone went unanswered.

Achimugu is the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Felak Concept Group, a conglomerate with interests in engineering, maritime, oil and gas, and information technology.
