PSC Enforces Mandatory Retirement for Senior Police Officers

PSC approves retirement of police officers above 60 amid IG tenure controversy

ABUJA – The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the immediate retirement of a number of senior police officers who have either served for 35 years or reached the mandatory retirement age of 60.

The decision was reached during the Commission’s first extraordinary meeting of 2025, held in Abuja and presided over by its Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu. Key officials, including retired Supreme Court Justice Adamu Paul Galumje, retired DIG Taiwo Lakanu, and Commission Secretary Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani, were in attendance.

A statement released by Ikechukwu Ani, spokesperson for the PSC, clarified that this action is in strict adherence to Public Service Rule No. 020908 (i & ii). This rule stipulates that retirement from public service is mandatory upon the completion of 35 years of service or the attainment of 60 years of age. The move aims to ensure compliance with established regulations and maintain the integrity of the police force's personnel management.

The statement further revealed that the Commission had previously approved, at its 24th Plenary Meeting in September 2017, a policy aligning the appointment date of Force entrants with their enlistment date. However, a recent review of this decision revealed that it contradicted the established principles of service merger within the broader public sector and, more importantly, violated existing retirement rules. This discrepancy prompted the Commission to reassess its earlier stance and revert to the established public service regulations.

“The Commission’s decision has been formally communicated to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation,” Ani stated. This directive signals a decisive step towards streamlining personnel management within the Nigeria Police Force and ensuring that all retirements are conducted in accordance with the legally mandated guidelines.

The move is expected to have a significant impact on the composition of the police force’s leadership and pave the way for the promotion and advancement of other officers. It also underscores the PSC's commitment to upholding the rules and regulations governing the police force. Further details regarding the specific number of officers affected and their ranks are expected to be released by the police authorities in due course.
