PDP Governors Affirm Ude-Okoye as National Secretary, Set NEC Meeting for March 13
PDP Governors Back Ude-Okoye, Reject Anyanwu, and Set NEC Meeting for March 13 Amid Leadership Crisis
Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have officially affirmed Sunday Ude-Okoye as the party’s National Secretary, in line with the Court of Appeal’s judgment in Enugu State. The decision was made during a meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum held in Asaba, Delta State, on Friday.
Led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, the PDP governors distanced themselves from embattled former National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu and called on the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to immediately implement the court’s ruling. In a communique issued after the meeting and signed by Mohammed, the governors also directed the NWC to convene the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting no later than March 13, 2025.
Deepening Leadership Crisis
The PDP has been grappling with internal turmoil since the 2023 general elections, with leadership disputes exacerbating the party’s struggles. The crisis escalated when Anyanwu, who had been serving as the National Secretary, was nominated as the party’s governorship candidate for Imo State. The PDP’s South-East zone argued that he should step down from his national role to focus on his governorship bid, leading to a fierce power struggle.
On December 20, 2024, the Court of Appeal in Enugu ruled in favor of Ude-Okoye, recognizing him as the legitimate National Secretary. The decision was communicated to the party leadership on December 24. However, in a fresh twist, the Court of Appeal in Abuja issued a restraining order on January 27, 2025, allowing Anyanwu to retain the position until the Supreme Court delivers a final ruling.
The crisis took a dramatic turn during a PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting on Thursday when Anyanwu’s supporters forcefully removed Ude-Okoye from the gathering. Security personnel had to intervene to restore order.
Governors Demand Implementation of Court Ruling
In their communique, the governors reaffirmed their support for the Enugu Court of Appeal’s judgment, calling on the NWC to take immediate steps to enforce the ruling.
“The Forum noted with delight the ongoing efforts at resolving the crisis in the National Working Committee (NWC) regarding the position of the National Secretary and has reaffirmed its support for the Court of Appeal judgment,” the communique stated. “Consequently, the Forum advised the NWC to set up the machinery for the effective implementation of the court judgment.”
The governors further instructed the NWC to ensure that all necessary legal notices are issued for the NEC meeting to hold on March 13, 2025.
Criticism of Federal Government Policies
Beyond party affairs, the PDP governors also used the meeting to assess the state of the nation, expressing concern over the country’s worsening economic situation. They accused the Federal Government of implementing harsh macroeconomic policies that have led to widespread hardship and suffering.
“The meeting noted that the macroeconomic policies of the Federal Government have inflicted hardship and pain on the polity. Therefore, the Forum calls on the Federal Government to either revisit or overhaul these policies to ease the suffering of Nigerians,” the statement read.
Security and National Stability
The governors commended security agencies for their efforts in tackling insecurity across the country but called for further improvements in Nigeria’s security architecture. They reassured Nigerians that the PDP remains committed to restoring economic stability, security, and better living conditions, similar to the pre-2015 era.
As the PDP works to resolve its internal divisions, the March 13 NEC meeting is expected to be a decisive moment in shaping the party’s future direction.
